A three-vehicle accident in Tooele County left three people dead and six injured on Sunday afternoon. A van carrying seven people in a youth church group from Dugway to Salt Lake City attempted to turn into the passing lane of S.R. 36 in Stansbury Park, shortly before 3:30 p.m., when another vehicle clipped the back bumper, sending the van into oncoming traffic, according to Trooper Evan Kirby of Utah Highway Patrol. A red Subaru then struck the passenger side of the van. A man and woman in the Subaru, later identified as Urban "James" Montoya, 61, and Melodie Clement, 58, were killed. An adult in the van, later identified as Donette "Dee Dee" McCollin, 43, also died at the scene. Several children were ejected 20 to 50 feet from the van, Kirby said. Five children aged 13 to 17 suffered injuries ranging from serious to critical, and the second adult in the van was also hospitalized. Three emergency helicopters flew victims to local hospitals. Nearby residents and passersby rushed out to help the injured. Officials closed down S.R. 36 to investigate the accident and clean up debris. They planned to reopen the road Sunday evening.
