A 40-year-old Gloucester man died shortly after a single-vehicle accident Thursday night, according to Virginia State Police.

Virginia State Police responded to a single-vehicle crash in Gloucester Friday where a driver was trapped inside his vehicle and passed away.
Virginia State Police responded to a single-vehicle crash in Gloucester Friday where a driver was trapped inside his vehicle and passed away. Around 12 p.m., a State Trooper was dispatched to the crash in the 5200 block of Route 17 (George Washington Memorial Highway) and found a 2000 Lincoln Town car had run off the road and struck a retaining wall. according to a VSP Sergeant the driver was trapped inside his vehicle and died at the scene shortly after the crash. The driver, 40-year-old Micheal Shawn Utley of Gloucester, had been traveling north in the southbound lanes prior to the crash. It is unknown where Utley entered the southbound lanes of Rt. 17. It is also unknown if speed or alcohol were a factor in the crash. Anaya said Utley was not properly restrained inside the vehicle.
