A 17-year-old James City County teen was killed in a head-on crash Sunday night.

Maj. Steve Rubino with the James City County Police Department said the crash occurred around 8:10 p.m. in the 3600 block of News Road.

A 2008 VW Jetta being driven by “Case” Hendrik Kees Van Leliveld drifted off the roadway for some unknown reason. Leliveld overcorrected and lost control of the vehicle, causing it to swerve into the path of a 2007 Toyota Rav4, which it struck head-on.

Leliveld was ejected from the vehicle and flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospita, where he died from his injuries. Police said Leliveld was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The driver of the other vehicle was transported to Riverside Regional Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. She was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Rubino said speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.
