The son of a deputy killed in the line of duty more than a decade ago was killed in a crash in Pittsylvania County early Friday. Four other people in the same car were injured.

Betterton was wearing a seat belt but was pronounced dead at the scene. Two passengers were transported to Danville Regional Medical Center for their injuries and two others were airlifted to Roanoke Memorial Hospital for their injuries.
Frankie Lynn Betterton and four passengers were traveling on Route 878 when the car went off the right side of the road and hit a tree. Betterton died, and the four passengers were hospitalized. Their names and ages have not yet been released. The accident is under investigation.
Betterton was the son of former Pittsylvania County Deputy Frankie Betterton, who was shot and killed during a routine traffic stop in May 2002.
