William Godfrey Jr., 68, struck and killed by car, while trying to cross Route 1 near Fort Belvior.

Fairfax County Police have identified the pedestrian fatally struck on Route 1 near Fort Belvior Thursday morning. Police say 68-year-old William Godfrey Jr. of Alexandria was crossing Richmond Highway near Backlick Road when he was struck by a 2005 Honda Civic. The driver remained at the scene. Godfrey was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators say it appears alcohol on the part of the pedestrian may have played a role in the accident. Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors when it comes to the driver. The investigation is ongoing.
