To her friends, Jennifer Lawson was an Arlington everymom — a supermom, really — who poured what seemed like an endless store of energy into raising her three kids.

A woman was struck by a dump truck and seriously injured near Nottingham Elementary School in Arlington Monday afternoon as she tended to a young child in the back seat of her van, authorities said. The woman, later identified as Jennifer Lawson, 39, had apparently just loaded a young child into a car seat when she was hit by the truck, which was headed west in the 5900 block of North Little Falls Road about 11:30 a.m., said Lt. Michael Watson, an Arlington County police spokesman. He said the force of the collision tore off the van’s door, but the child in the car seat was unhurt. The driver of the privately owned truck stayed at the scene of the crash and was cooperating with investigators, Watson said. He was unhurt, Watson said. Watson said that while the mechanics of the crash were relatively straightforward, investigators were still looking into some of the finer points — including precisely where the woman was standing as she loaded the child into the car seat and how fast the truck was going. He said investigators were also planning to perform a full commercial vehicle inspection of the truck. Watson said police had not yet assigned blame or charged anyone in connection with the incident. “From an accident point of view, it was a very simple accident, but it gets complicated when you start trying to figure out speeds and where they were on the roadway,” Watson said. The crash occurred near Nottingham Elementary School, although it was unclear exactly why the woman was there Monday, Watson said. He declined to identify the woman or provide other details about her family other than to say her husband had been notified of the incident. The woman was transported to the hospital with injuries that Watson described as “serious.” He said that as of 2:30 p.m., her condition had not changed. Get updates on your area delivered via e-mail
