Man killed in head-on crash on I-5 near Conway

One man was killed and three other people were injured in a 4-vehicle crash on I-5 near Conway on Thursday afternoon. Troopers say a car traveling in the southbound lanes crossed the median into northbound traffic near the Highway 534 interchange, hitting another car head-on. The driver who crossed the median was a 19-year-old woman in a Honda Civic. I-5 was closed in the northbound direction for a few hours while troopers investigated. Two other people, a 23-year-old woman from Tukwila and a 42-year-old woman from Oak Harbor, were taken to Skagit Valley Hospital with minor injuries.

CONWAY, Wash. -- Washington State Patrol is investigating whether a loose dog inside a car contributed to a multi-car crash on I-5 in Conway Thursday afternoon that left one person dead. Washington State Patrol later said the female driver of the car that caused the accident told detectives she had a dog running around inside the car. The crash happened around 5 p.m. at State Route 534 just south of Mount Vernon and involved four vehicles. All lanes of I-5 re-opened just before 6 p.m. Officials are still investigating whether this played any part in the crash.

The 19-year-old woman was injured in the collision and transported to Skagit Valley Hospital before she was booked in jail Thursday evening. She is held without bail on suspicion of vehicular homicide, but prosecutors have not charged her with a crime, according to jail records.
