Authorities identify man killed by train near Kalama

The man struck and killed by a freight train near Kalama Friday was Jerry Lee Ward, a 50-year-old transient from Longview, the Cowlitz County Coroner’s Office announced Saturday.

BNSF Railway reports that a man has died after being hit by a locomotive just south of Kalama. The man was walking on the tracks along the Columbia River when the southbound train struck him just before 1 p.m. Friday. The locomotive was one of two being moved from Kalama to Vancouver. The railroad crew saw the man along the track, blew a warning whistle and used emergency brakes, but the train still struck the man on the shoulder.
