Bicyclist struck, killed by SUV near Port Townsend

State troopers and medics responded to the scene, about 4½ miles south of Port Townsend on Highway 19, at around 1:10 a.m. after receiving a report of a serious accident involving a bicycle. The bicyclist, later identified as a Esther M. Machado, 38, of Tacoma, was found dead at the scene. A preliminary investigation found that Machado was heading south on her bike on the shoulder of Highway 19 just south of Four Corners Road as a 1999 Ford Expedition was also heading south on the highway. The driver of the Expedition, a 40-year-old Port Townsend man, veered off the roadway onto the shoulder and slammed into Machado. It's unknown whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
