Maple St. Bridge back open 7 hrs. after crash; Driver charged with Vehicular Assault

A crash on the Maple Street Bridge early Wednesday morning has put one woman, the passenger in the crash, in the hospital fighting for her life. He is charged with vehicular assault and is suspected of DUI. The crash happened around 1:38 a.m. Southbound lanes of the bridge were closed for seven hours after the crash, opening back up around 8:30 a.m. The driver of the car, who Spokane Police have identified as Christopher T. Nelson, did not sustain any injuries.

Sheriff's deputies say Nelson was released from the Kootenai County Jail around 6:30 p.m. Court documents say Nelson told police he was drinking before he got in the car. Deputies say they arrested Nelson Monday afternoon for the crime, but he bonded out roughly seven hours before the crash, which doctors say has critically injured his mother. Officers say he also had red and watery eyes, and he was having trouble standing up straight.

His mother was in the front passenger seat and was unconscious at the scene. Doctors told police she had a severe head injury, according to court documents. A nursing supervisor at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center confirmed late Wednesday that Nelson’s mother, Nancy Wennstrom, died of her injuries.
