Police have now confirmed that there are two fatalities.

The interstate was experiencing white-out conditions from a fast-moving snow squall at the time of two separate, serious crashes, WHAG reported.

Police stated that 14 people were taken to area hospitals after the crashes. Of seven patients taken to Berkeley Medical Center, three are in critical condition and four have been stabilized in the ER.

State police said 44 vehicles, including several large trucks, were involved in the crashes.

Both happened near milemarker 21 between Clear Spring and Falling Waters shortly before 9 a.m. One accident occurred in the northbound lanes; the other in the southbound lanes.

West Virginia State Police have closed I-81 in both directions. Police stated at midday that the lanes will likely be closed for four to six hours.
