Investigators believe the pilot was trying to return to the airport when the plane crashed about a mile south of the airport near the Rock River, the Janesville Gazette reported.
Report: Pilot had engine issues, asked to land before crash
An air traffic controller asked if assistance was needed, to which a pilot, who was not identified, replied, "no sir, we should be fine," the report said. No other radio communication was received from the plane.
