One of two snowmobiles riding together crashed into an unoccupied ice fishing trailer on a western Wisconsin lake late at night, killing a 20-year-old woman riding behind the drunken operator on the trailing machine, authorities said Thursday. The crash occurred about 10 p.m. Wednesday on Bone Lake, southeast of Luck, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. The woman suffered “severe head injuries” despite wearing a helmet, the Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. People at the scene began resuscitation efforts, but she died at the scene, the Sheriff’s Office added. Her identity was being withheld pending notification of relatives. Arrested at the scene on suspicion of operating a snowmobile while intoxicated was Nicholas Krenz, 21, authorities said. Krenz, who lives in the Twin Cities and grew up in St. Croix Falls, Wis., was not hurt. He has not been formally charged in incident as of Thursday. Deputies became suspicious that Krenz was intoxicated after detecting an odor of alcohol and their observations of him, the sheriff added. The snowmobiles were heading north between the lake’s islands and its eastern shore, when the trailing machine hit the structure, the Sheriff’s Office said. A Sheriff spokesman said that Krenz struck the “big, enclosed trailer” with a “glancing hit” at what he suspects was an excessive speed along the dark stretch of lake.
