A Newport News police officer was injured in a crash while en route to a gas station robbery Tuesday night, a spokesman said.

The K-9 officer was on his way to respond to a report of a robbery at a Shell gas station in the 10000 block of Jefferson Avenue that was reported just before 7:30 p.m., said a Newport News Police Department spokesman.

Preliminary reports indicate that a minivan and the police car crashed at the intersection of Jefferson Avenue and Harpersville Road while the police car had its emergency equipment activated, Thurston said.

The officer and a person in the minivan were taken to a local hospital for injuries that do not appear to be life-threatening, according to Thurston. The police dog was taken to a local veterinarian and did not have any major issues.
