Crash with tractor-trailer kills woman near I-664.

A woman was killed in a two-vehicle crash that occurred shortly before 11 a.m. south of the inspection station on the Monitor Merrimac Memorial Bridge Tunnel Thursday.

A woman was killed in a two-vehicle crash that occurred shortly before 11 a.m. south of the inspection station on the Monitor Merrimac Memorial Bridge Tunnel Thursday. The accident happened near the College Drive exit, a Virginia State Police spokeswoman said in an email.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the woman, Darla Ann Alexander -- who was driving a 2013 Toyota -- rear-ended a 2010 Kenworth tractor trailer, which was stopped in the area for a wide load crossing the Monitor-Merrimac, police said. The woman died from her injuries at the scene, police said. The driver of the tractor trailer, John Chase Jr., was not injured.

VDOT began to reroute traffic to Route 17 to cross at the James River Bridge and at approximately 1:52 pm all northbound lanes were open to traffic.
