A tractor trailer hit a bridge and caught fire Sunday morning on the 15 Freeway north near Baker, causing a fuel spill that shut down the freeway for several hours, according to the California Highway Patrol. The crash happened about 5 a.m. on the 15 at the North Zzyzx Road offramp. The CHP log did not mention any injuries. One lane reopened shortly after 9 a.m., the CHP stated. Clean up was expected to take until about 7 p.m., the log said.

There were nine total victims, four were taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, two declined medical attention, two “met the trauma criteria guidelines” and one was dead on arrival.

A fatal accident has been reported by the California Highway Patrol at State Route 58 and Fairfax Road in Southeast Bakersfield.

The Kern County Sheriff's Office has released three of the four names of the people killed at the scene.

According to the CHP, at around 7:39 a.m., James Luschen, 42, was driving a van that was traveling west on highway 58.

Luschen swerved to avoid traffic, lost control and crossed the median into eastbound traffic.
