32-year-old Matthew Chew Jriyasetapong was headed south on Jefferson Boulevard in a pickup truck at about 9:00 a.m., when he for some reason slowly veered into the oncoming lane and collided with a northbound semi-truck. The crash sent Jriyasetapong's mangled pickup truck into a roadside canal. It was then that volunteer fireman Dave Welch happened to see the wrecked vehicle in the water as he drove by. He quickly got out to assist Jriyasetapong, who was trapped in the vehicle, and prevented him from drowning until repsonders could free him.

A boat carrying 10 people who were fishing in the San Joaquin River struck some rocks and flipped upside down at about 4:00 p.m., dumping all occupants into the water. One 8-year-old child, identified as Jonathan Ledesma Mejia, was killed from either being hit by the boat or more rocks in the river, and three other people were brought to the hospital but are expected to recover. All children were wearing life-jackets.

A police chase ended with the suspect’s car and the squad car in Arcade Creek in Sacramento. Sacramento police officers attempted to pull over the car near Marconi Avenue and Connie Drive in Sacramento. That’s when the suspect took off and then crashed into the creek. Both cars have since been removed from the creek bed. No one was seriously injured.
