"The tractor trailer took evasive action to miss it as it was turning, and lost control and turned over.  The tank remained on the highway and the two vehicles behind it ran into the tank and were engulfed in flames."

Concerns grow after deadly accident

Five people were killed in an accident involving four vehicles Thursday morning in the Eagle Ford shale oilfield in Dimmit County, Texas. All five were believed to be oilworkers. The wreck occurred on Highway 83 between Carrizo Springs and Asherton. U.S. Highway 83 North is closed one mile north of Asherton between FM 190 and FM 1557. A pickup was southbound on Highway 83 about one mile north of Asherton when the driver attempted to turn left, causing a truck that was hauling a tank trailer full of crude oil to swerve in an attempt to avoid a collision, but it was unable to get out of the way and struck the pickup. After hitting the pickup, the truck went off the road while the fuel tank it was pulling landed in the highway. At this point, a van and another pickup truck slammed into the tank. The fuel inside erupted in flames, engulfing both vehicles. There were seven men in the van, and five were killed: Juan Francisco Medellin, 65, Sergio Javier Veyro, 50, Carlos Rubio, 30, Eduardo Pena, 22, and Justin Lara, 21, all from Laredo. The condition of the two survivors from the van is unclear. The driver of the second pickup that hit the tank was brought to a hospital with burns to 80 percent of his body.
