Pickup driven by Jim Flink crashes through ice on Lake Peltier in Anoka County. No injuries reported.

Despite being very familiar with an Anoka County lake, a man crashed his pickup truck through the ice Sunday morning.

Authorities say Jim Flink of Elk River was driving a Chevy Silverado while pulling a snowmobile trailer on Peltier Lake in Lino Lakes when it broke through the ice.

Before the incident, Flink says he stopped and talked to a group of people on the lake who said it had about 14-18 inches of ice. He decided to drive on the lake to go snowmobiling. Flink says the front end of his truck went through ice that was about an inch thick.

Flink and three others in the vehicle were able to get out of the truck and make it safely to shore. "Thank god I had the window open and we managed to get out through the windows," he said.

Flink thought he was being careful, and now he wants to know what went wrong.

There is a sign on Peltier Lake that it has an aeration system that can change the thickness of the ice. There are warning signs on the lake with marked areas that say, "danger thin ice- stay away." Flink tells KSTP they stayed away from those marked areas and thought they were safe.

KSTP has tried to reach the DNR to see if they know what went wrong. As of Sunday evening, we had not heard back.

Officials from the Anoka County Sheriff's Department came out to the lake following the incident, to warn others about the thin ice.
