Semi driver killed trying to stop for fire truck in St. Cloud

Troopers are now looking at who loaded the beams and just how they were strapped. They are also working to notify family members before releasing the driver's identification.

The 32-year-old driver, of Orlando, stopped his semi abruptly to yield to an Osceola County firetruck turning onto Narcoossee Road with its lights on and sirens blaring, said Sgt. Kim Montes, spokeswoman for FHP.

Witnesses told troopers the fire truck was stopped at a stop sign and was about to turn right on Narcoosee Road when the driver of the semi-truck suddenly braked and the load of metal beams on the truck shifted.

Trucker tried to do 'right thing' in fatal accident, friends say

"It is very sad because he was trying to do the right thing and stop," friend Jose Santiago said. "Many people just keep driving."

Estien was heading north on Narcoossee Road just before 4 p.m. Wednesday, state troopers said, when he slammed on the brakes of the tractor-trailer he was driving to avoid hitting a firetruck coming out of a station on Yukon Street near St. Cloud.

A semi-truck driver was killed in a freak accident as he tried to stop for a fire truck. The 32-year-old semi driver slammed on the brakes so hard that beams on the trailer came crashing through the cab crushing him to death. Witnesses wonder if an emergency signal wasn't activated before the fire truck headed out for the emergency call.
