The crash occurred just before 7 a.m. Thursday on Longtown Road near Mood Harrison Road. According to Fairfield County Coroner Barkley Ramsey, 23-year-old Debante Middleton was walking down Longtown Road and was hit by the car in the eastbound side. The driver stopped to check on Middleton, but a second driver struck Middleton again and took off.

Man killed in hit-and-run while in road awaiting help

Authorities say a 23-year-old man was struck and killed by a car whose driver stopped only briefly as another driver who hit the man earlier was seeking help. Ramsey says the first driver who hit Middleton spoke to him and was calling 911 when the second car hit him. Investigators say the second driver stopped briefly before driving off. Fairfield County Coroner Barkley Ramsey told media outlets that Debante Middleton was in the road after being hit when he was struck and killed by another vehicle around 6:45 a.m. Troopers say they're looking for a dark compact car that likely has damage to the front bumper and headlight.
