BPD police officer's mother killed in afternoon hit-and-run in Birmingham

Officers from several agencies responded to the crash at Pleasant Grove Road and Erie Street about 2:59 p.m. West Precinct officers provided a police escort for the ambulance carrying the victim to UAB Hospital, but police officials said she died en route to the hospital.

Police were located the suspect vehicle, a black pick up truck, a short time later on Avenue E in Ensley. Police are currently searching for the suspect.

Police have obtained a felony warrant against Melvin Taylor, 26, for leaving the scene of an accident with injuries. Taylor turned himself in on Monday night and is being held in the Birmingham City Jail.
A woman was driving on Pleasant Grove Road and Erie Street at around 3 p.m. when a black pickup truck veered into her lane and hit her head-on before fleeing the scene. Investigators are still searching for the truck and its driver. The woman, reported to be the mother of a local police officer, was taken by ambulance to UAB Hospital but died en route.
