The accident occurred on at the rail crossing at the intersection of Larry Nolan Road and University Boulevard East near Cottondale. It is not clear if the snow showers, icy roads and other winter conditions that plagued drivers in the state Tuesday were a major contributing factor to the collision. The survivors of the initial accident are being treated for serious injuries at DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa. Because of HIIPA privacy laws, a representative there could not release the conditions of the wounded until their identities are released by state troopers. Police identified the two men who were killed as 57-year-old Charles Kelly Meiklejohn, a Gulf Shores man, and his passenger Nahum Terrance Mickles, a 39-year-old man from Foley. A representative for Norfolk Southern did not return calls about the status of the train, which partially derailed, or its cargo by Wednesday morning.
