Vehicle-pedestrian collision claims former City of Barrow mayor

The man struck by a small SUV and killed on East Fifth Avenue near Merrill Field late Monday served as the mayor of Barrow for more than a decade, according to staff in Alaska’s northernmost city. Ronette Panningona, a receptionist for current Barrow Mayor Bob Harcharek, said Tuesday that Nathaniel Olemaun Jr., 72, was the Barrow’s mayor from 1977 to 1989. He was also elected to a three-year term in 2004. Harcharek confirmed that the man who died Monday in Anchorage was the former mayor.
