Man arrested after deadly Iditarod crash, claims he was drunk

Alaska State Troopers say 26-year-old Arnold Demoski of Nulato is being held on two counts of assault, reckless endangerment, reckless driving and six counts of criminal mischief.

An apologetic Demoski told the Alaska Dispatch News that he had not intentionally driven into the dog teams, but he had blacked out while returning from drinking in another village.

The crashes killed one of King's dogs and injured at least two others 20km outside of Nulato. One of Zirkle's dogs also was injured.

King's team was hit by a snowmobiler, injuring several dogs and killing one — Nash, a 3-year-old male.

Reporter Emily Schwing tells our Newscast unit that King's sled has lights and reflectors.

"It really felt like reckless bravado and playing chicken," King told Emily.

Man Accused in Iditarod Crash has $50,000 Bail

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports that bail was set at $50,000 on Sunday for 26-year-old Arnold Demoski. He faces charges including assault and reckless endangerment after authorities say he rammed into the dog sled teams of Aliy Zirkle and four-time Iditarod champion Jeff King early Saturday.
