Rodolfo Nunez, 39, arrested on multiple charges, after a police pursuit leads to a chase on I-17 and then a crash, on a city street, with another vehicle, where he was captured after a short foot pursuit.

A driver involved in a high-speed chase was tackled by an off-duty officer after he crashed into another vehicle, bailed and tried to run from the scene.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety began pursuing Rodolfo Nunez, 39, for reckless driving on southbound Interstate 17 at about 5 p.m.

The chase ended up on Phoenix surface streets.

Nunez struck another vehicle at 51st Avenue and Cactus and then bailed out, officers said.

As he ran down a sidewalk on an overpass, the off-duty officer saw him fleeing and tackled him.

Five other officers were close behind. An Arizona Department of Public Safety officer deployed a stun gun to subdue the suspect. Nunez was placed in handcuffs and led away.

"I went in my backyard and saw two helicopters coming around, it was 5:30," said Michael Osborne, who lives nearby. "I thought they must be chasing somebody."

The chase started on I-17 near Jomax. DPS officers tried to pull Nunez over as he approached Deer Valley but the suspect wouldn't stop, according to DPS spokesman Officer Carrick Cook.

Nunez exited at Greenway but began running through lights on southbound Frontage Road, so DPS backed off and let Phoenix Police Department's helicopter take over the pursuit, Cook said.

"He is in custody," said Carrick Cook with DPS. "He's going to be facing several charges including felony flight, wreckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, aggravated assault."

DPS is handling the pursuit investigation, and Phoenix police are handling the crash investigation.

"He could've hurt anybody so I'm just glad he got off the streets," Osborne said.

Nunez has faced a number of drug charges in Arizona. He pleaded guilty in Maricopa County to a marijuana violation in 2005, according to court records. A drug paraphernalia violation was dismissed in 2005.
