DPS identifies 2 killed in wrong-way crash in southeast Phoenix

Authorities have identified two men who were killed when their SUV crashed head-on into a truck while going the wrong way on a freeway ramp Tuesday in southeast Phoenix, but they were no closer to saying what led to the deadly collision.

Jeremiah Trotter, 63, and Bennett Frank Vella, 28, were headed eastbound on a ramp linking westbound Interstate 10 to westbound Santan Freeway/Pecos Road just before the 1:12 p.m. collision, the Arizona Department of Public Safety said Wednesday.

Wrong-way driver in deadly crash on I-10 ramp to Loop 202 identified

The Department of Public Safety has identified two people who were killed a wrong-way crash on the transition ramp from westbound Interstate 10 to westbound Loop 202 Santan Freeway Tuesday afternoon. That crash put two more people to the hospital.

The crash was reported via 911 call shortly after 1 p.m.

According to Raul Garcia of the Department of Public Safety, an SUV traveling eastbound on the westbound ramp collided head-on with a pickup truck. Aerial video from the Penguin Air and Plumbing News Chopper showed the vehicles practically nose to nose.

Wrong-way crash victims remain in critical condition

Investigators are still trying to figure out why and how the wrong-way driver got onto the ramp. The driver left the Ahwatukee area, to Pecos Road, headed east on Loop 202 -- only he was on the westbound ramp.
