Asst. UA research scientist killed in Oracle Rd crash

"Dr. Raphael Sagarin, associate research scientist for Biosphere 2 and adjunct assistant professor for the School of Natural Resources and the Environment, was killed Thursday in a bicycle accident on Highway 77 between Biosphere 2 and the town of Oracle. Dr. Sagarin was committed to education and research, and understood that the Biosphere was a unique platform for science and education. He represented all of us in our commitment to quality and making things better.

“He was thrilled when he got the chance to lead the ocean ecosystem initiative at Biosphere 2,” Diana Liverman, co-director of the institute, said in an email. “His dream was to convert it to something more like the Sea of Cortez ... so that it would be an example of the ‘desert sea’ of the Sonoran desert.”
Raphael "Rafe" Sagarin, 43, was riding his bicycle on State Route 77, also known as Oracle Road, when he was struck from the back by a pickup truck driven by 44-year-old Gary L. Colvin. Sagarin later died from his injuries. According to authorities, Colvin was allegedly impaired at the time of the collision. He was arrested and has been booked into the Pinal County Jail on a manslaughter charge.
