I-30 lanes closed as crews work crash involving 4 tractor-trailers, 2 cars

Westbound lanes of Interstate 30 near Exit 114 in Benton are closed "until further notice" while officials work a multi-vehicle accident involving four tractor-trailers and two cars, according to authorities. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and find alternate routes while authorities continue to respond to the "major accident," the sheriff's office said. According to a Saline County sheriff's office alert Tuesday afternoon, both directions of traffic were shut down for a "period of time" to allow helicopters to land, though eastbound lanes were back open as of about 1:52 p.m.

Authorities are still investigating the crash scene, but say two vehicles were driving between two 18-wheelers, when all four vehicles slowed or stopped. That's when a third 18-wheeler collided with the back of the second 18-wheeler, causing a rear-end chain reaction crash. They are still trying to determine what caused the initial slow down to occur.

Arkansas State Police were called around 12:30 p.m. in response to five vehicles being involved in a crash near exit 114, authorities said. Two passenger vehicles were traveling in the same lane of traffic between two tractor trailers at the time of the crash. The two passenger vehicles and two tractor-trailers slowed or stopped when a third tractor-trailer collided with the four vehicles, causing a rear-end chain reaction crash, ASP said. Four victims had non-life threatening injuries as a result of the crash, according to police. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
