Chico, known as the "City of Roses" is the most populous city in Butte County, California, and is one of the richest agricultural areas in the world. The original inhabitants of the area now known as Chico were the Mechoopda Maidu Native Americans.  As of the 2010 census population was 86,187 up from 59,954 at the time of the 2000 census. Redding is located on Interstate 5 in Northern California, and the Sacramento River courses through the city. It has a population of 89,861 and is the largest city in the Shasta Cascade region, and is the fourth largest city in the Sacramento Valley.

The major roads through Chico and Redding include:

  • State Route 99 and State Route 32 intersect in Chico.
  • Interstate 5 runs through the east central portion of Redding.
  • CA 299, formerly U.S. 299, runs through the western, central, and northeastern parts of Redding.
  • CA 44 runs through the middle and eastern part of town. Its western terminus is at Market Street (California 273) in downtown Redding.
  • CA 273, was formerly the Interstate 5 Business Route, and also formerly the U.S. 99, directly through Redding.

Three students from Las Plumas High School were involved in a multiple vehicle crash on Lower Wyandotte Avenue Friday in Oroville. The collision occurred during the students lunch and there is one confirmed fatality.
Herman Spero was driving a semi-truck on Interstate 5 when the vehicle left the exit ramp from southbound Interstate 5 at North Market Street, went down a steep embankment, and came to rest on its side. Spero died in the crash.
