The crash occurred at 12:45 a.m. at the intersection of Balboa Boulevard and Parthenia Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The victim, Robert Ramage, was driving a sedan south on Balboa Boulevard when he was struck by a pickup truck on his driver’s side door, ejecting him from the car.

According to witnesses, the driver of the pickup truck and two male passengers fled the crash scene on foot, leaving their truck in the middle of the road. Ramage was found unconscious and suffering from head injuries and broken bones, LAPD said. He was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Family members and friends have started a memorial fund in his honor and plan to hold a vigil at the scene of the crash at 8 p.m. Ramage was working toward becoming a veterinarian.
