A 29-year-old man died Friday following a parachuting accident at the Perris Valley Airport, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said.

The man was attempting to land when the accident was reported about 11:20 a.m. He was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, sheriff’s Sgt. Frank Lodes said.

The man was an Army sky diver who trains other jumpers, but he was not training at the time. He is believed to be based in Yuma, Ariz., the newspaper said.

He was coming in for a landing when he made a turn at a low elevation, said the general manager at Perris Valley Skydiving. The man was jumping by himself after parachuting with other family members earlier in the day.
