Horse killed, 3 people hurt in Citrus Heights crash

A horse was killed and three people were hurt early Wednesday morning in Citrus Heights when a vehicle crashed into the escaped horse, officials said. The horse died as a result of the crash, and the three other horses were unhurt. Four adult horses escaped their paddock sometime before 1 a.m. and were in the roadway near the intersection of Auburn Boulevard and Hackney Way, according to the Metro Fire Department. A small vehicle hit one of the horses, which was thrown onto the hood of the vehicle, crushing the windshield and continuing over the top of the car, fire officials said. All three suffered minor to moderate injuries and were taken to a hospital for treatment.
