Volunteers gathered in the remote spot outside Gilroy where Vaca and 69-year-old Jon Dennis died in a plane crash Saturday night.
Investigators do not know why the plane crashed, but according to the Civil Air Patrol, the Cessna took off early Saturday afternoon from Frazier Lake Airpark.
A South Bay High School is mourning the death of a popular student after the plane she was riding in crashed in the back hills of Gilroy.
The propeller assembly showed "that one if its blades had multiple s-type bending and a small portion of the blade's tip was missing," officials reported. "The other blade was slightly bent rearward."
A single-engine plane that crashed and killed two passengers near Gilroy on Nov. 8 collided accidentally with power lines and steep terrain, according to a report released Monday by the National Transportation Safety Board.
Despite the crash into rugged terrain, the aircraft remained mostly intact, investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board said in a preliminary report. It lost only its propeller when it went down.
Lincoln High School senior Kiely Vaca was killed in the crash in a remote area near Gilroy. She was 18 years old and played varsity basketball. Grief counselors were at the high school to help students and teachers cope with the teen's death.
