Hayward: One dead in crash on Interstate 880

HAYWARD -- A person died in a crash between a motorcycle and big rig on Interstate 880 early Thursday, the California Highway Patrol said. The CHP issued a SIG Alert for severe traffic after the wreck, as they cleaned debris out of the two left lanes. The alert, issued at 6:15 a.m., was expected to be in effect for a significant time, Bartlett said. The crash happened around 6:01 a.m. on southbound I-880 under the Highway 92 connector ramp, Bartlett said. Few details were available immediately, but the driver on the motorcycle was believed to the victim, CHP Officer Kevin Bartlett said.

The motorcyclist who crashed into a box truck and died last week on a South Bay freeway was a Brentwood man, the Alameda County Coroner's said Monday. According to the CHP, Lieberwirth was driving the motorcycle in between the far left lane and the one to its right when he collided with a box truck. The 6:01 a.m. wreck closed down two lanes of the freeway for more than two hours. The truck driver wasn't injured and stayed at the scene. Gerry Lieberwirth, 56, crashed on southbound Interstate 880 on Feb. 4 after trying to split lanes of traffic while on a bluish black Harley Davidson, the California Highway Patrol said.
