Just before 1 p.m., officials confirmed a crash had occurred. The plane went down near the 101 Freeway and Taylor Road under unknown circumstances, said Allen Kenitzer, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration.

Investigators found that Michael Brannigan's single-engine Cessna broke up in midair while he was flying over the Solimar Beach area along Highway 101, said Peter Knudson, an NTSB spokesman in Washington, D.C.
