2 San Diego men killed in Southern California plane crash

Authorities said Bacino had hired Martz, a commercial pilot, to fly him to a business meeting in San Luis Obispo. The plane, a single-engine Cessna 182, was rented out of the San Diego area.

The lawsuit said Martz issued a mayday call to Point Magoo Naval Air Station about 10:10 p.m. on Aug. 6, saying the plane was leaking oil that spread across the windscreen, and that the cabin and cockpit were smoking. Radio contact then broke off.

Two men died in plane wreck in a remote area of Southern California. The pilot was 58-year-old David Martz and his passenger was 56-year-old Greg Bacino. They were traveling from Lompoc to McClellan-Palomar Airport in Carlsbad Thursday night when they reported loss of engine power. The wreckage was located early Friday on a mountainside 30 to 40 miles north of Ojai.
