Boulder County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a man Thursday morning using tear gas after he led them on a pursuit in a stolen moving van in Boulder County and Longmont.

Darell Dickens, 48, of Aurora, was arrested and taken to a hospital because of self-inflicted injuries. According to a Boulder County Sheriff’s Office release, Dickens told deputies “he was under the influence of methamphetamine and alcohol.”

The sheriff’s office also says Dickens has a long criminal history that includes assault on a peace officer, dangerous drugs and parole violations.

Boulder Police spotted the van traveling north of the city on U.S. 36 about 5:30 a.m. but could not confirm it was the stolen vehicle that was reported by Wheat Ridge Police because it had no rear license plate.

After Dickens did not stop, the officers did not pursue and sheriff’s deputies followed the van. The deputies were able to confirm the van was stolen by the front license plate.

Deputies tried to stop the van as it traveled east on Nelson Road and North 75th Street, but Dickens failed to stop. He then drove over four sets of stop sticks, deflating the van’s tires.

Dickens then drove onto Ken Pratt Parkway and then on Highway 119 before turning into the lot of Intrado at 1601 Dry Creek Drive, where van struck a park vehicle with an occupant inside.

The van then left the parking lot onto Dry Creek and became high centered on a curb. Dickens refused to leave the vehicle, so deputies broke a window of the van and used tear gas.

Dickens still didn’t exit the van, so two deputies entered on the passenger side and removed him.

Dickens is expected to be charged with two active warrants (possession of dangerous drugs and assault on a peace officer); aggravated motor vehicle theft; driving under the influence of drugs; driving under restraint; eluding; leaving the scene of an accident; resisting arrest; and additional traffic charges.
