While investigating a crash scene on Highway 66 in Longmont, a Colorado State Patrol cadet and trooper were struck by a vehicle.

He is being held for investigation of first-degree murder with extreme indifference, attempted first-degree murder with extreme indifference, vehicular assault, vehicular homicide, eluding a police officer, driving vehicle while license canceled or denied and illegal use of blue lights.

Thyfault was going to be assigned to Pagosa Springs after graduation, according to CSP Durango. The flags at the Colorado State Patrol Academy at the Capitol were flown at half-staff Saturday in his honor.

Cadet, 21-year-old Taylor Thyfault, 21, and trooper, Clinton Rushing, 37, were struck by a Honda Civic driven by a 27-year-old male who drove into a crash investigation scene. Rushing and Thyfault were standing outside of their vehicle when the suspect vehicle hit them. Thyfault was pronounced deceased at the crash site, and Rushing was transported to the hospital in critical condition.
