In the area the accident occurred, mailboxes peak out of snowbanks, and those standing in the road may not have an easy escape from an oncoming car.

Troopers from an accident reconstruction team and from the Troop D barracks in the Danielson section of Killingly are investigating.
Gersh was walking just outside of her own home on Water Street at about 6:28pm when she was hit by a car driven by Melinda Paulsen, 65. The crash severley injured Gersh, and she was pronounced dead after being transported to a hospital. Excessive snow on and around the roadways is being considered as a possible contributor.
