Police in D.C. are investigating the death of a construction worker after a driver crashed into a work zone on Suitland Parkway in southeast Washington.

A vehicle fatally struck a construction worker on the Suitland Parkway causing the roadway to be shutdown early Thursday morning.

The accident occurred around 11 p.m. Wednesday night when an SUV hit a construction worker, according to D.C. Police. Officials said they did not know if the man was sitting in his truck or standing outside of it at the time of the accident.
The roadway was shutdown in both directions between Firth Sterling Avenue and Stanton Road SE for several hours overnight and into early Thursday morning.
At 6 a.m., two inbound lanes on the parkway had re-opened and the rest of the roadway was expected to re-open shortly, according to a Twitter feed from D.C. Police.
The identity of the man who was killed was not released, pending the notification of his relatives. The driver of the vehicle was taken to an area hospital, police said.
