A 60-year-old man was struck and killed last week in Southeast D.C. walking to a doctor's appointment.
Joseph Brown was walking across the Sousa Bridge just before 6 a.m. last Friday when he was struck by a pickup truck.
He was on his way to the Potomac Avenue Metro station -- he had a doctor's appointment at George Washington University Hospital. Brown was transported to Howard University Hospital and succumbed to his injuries Monday, which included a broken vertebrae.
"My heart is heavy and I'm saddened by the way it transpired, leading up to him losing his life," his sister said. "He hit his brakes and he slid into my brother."
His sister said her brother had to walk on the street because the bridge's sidewalk hadn't been cleared of snow -- he had even received a citation from police for walking on the street.
The rest of her family celebrated her brother's 61st birthday in the hospital Saturday, just hours before he died.
Police continue to investigate the crash.
