Gen. Mark Milley assists at scene of car-Metrobus crash that killed Tyree Bailey, 19, on Suitland Parkway in Washington, D.C.

The crash also injured another person in the car and two bus passengers, D.C. Fire and EMS tweeted. The bus leaked fuel as a result of the crash, and a Hazmat crew was called to the scene.

Gen. Mark Milley, the Army's chief of staff, was riding in a two-car convoy from Joint Base Andrews in suburban Maryland to Fort Myer, Virginia, when they came upon an accident between a passenger car and a Metrobus.

According to Army Lt. Col. Rob Shaw, two soldiers helped pull one person from the car before it caught fire, and two others provided first aid to that person until the ambulance arrived. 

According to a person familiar with the incident, Milley helped direct the response and assisted with the first aid. The soldiers were unable to pull the other victim from the car because it was in flames, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to speak publicly about the incident. 

Asija Ellerbe told News4 police notified her that her boyfriend, 19-year-old Tyree Bailey, is the person who died in the crash.

Ellerbe, who is six-months pregnant, said she last heard from Bailey about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday night when he told her he was in Riverdale with his friend and he was on his way home.

An emotional tribute was held for 19-year-old Tyrie Bailey at a park in Southeast D.C., NBC Washingtonreports.
