New York man identified in deadly St. Johns crash trying to avoid ladder on I-95
Troopers are still investigating, but the law says a vehicle’s load must be properly secured.
Stavros J. Dalambakis, 59, has been identified as the driver who died Thursday in a St. Johns County crash trying to avoid a ladder on Interstate 95. He was driving a pickup truck towing a trailer about 12:15 p.m. when a ladder fell off Oscar Edgardo Recino’s Toyota 4Runner. Dalambakis was able to avoid colliding with the ladder but the trailer jackknifed and the pickup landed upside down in a water-filled ditch. Dalambakis was killed and his wife, Jacqueline Dalambakis, 60, was injured. Recino, of Jacksonville, was not injured and may be facing charges.
Why every fatality from a crash is not legally a wrongful death
After someone dies in a motor-vehicle accident, grieving family members and friends are often left with many questions. What caused the accident? Could it have been avoided? What do they do now that their loved one is gone?
Sometimes a fatal collision happens through no one's fault. Crashes caused by weather and road conditions, or by wildlife in the roadway, are examples. But when a fatal crash is caused by negligence, then family members should pursue a wrongful death claim, to uphold the victim's rights and begin the financial recovery process.
