The Florida Highway Patrol says the oar either dropped from a recreational vehicle as Theisen passed by, or it kicked up from the asphalt. It struck the front end of her Chevy Suburban before going through the windshield.

The agency supplied photos that showed just how close Theisen had been to a serious or even fatal injury.
After piercing the windshield, the oar handle remained in the glass and the dashboard and steering column were dusted with glass shards.
