At this point, troopers said it does not appear that speed was a factor in the crash. Both drivers gave blood samples for testing. Everyone was wearing their seat belt except for the 16-year-old, according to FHP.
One man was killed and five people were injured in a head-on crash on South U.S. 301 late Thursday night. Kirk T. Williams, 53, of California, was killed in crash, which happened at about 10:19 p.m. He was a passenger in a 2005 Chrysler 300 traveling south with his three teenage children to visit a family member in The Villages. The car collided with a 2007 Chrysler Town & Country minivan that was heading north on U.S. 301. The driver of the car, 18-year-old Nicholas Ryan Williams, told a trooper that he was on the wrong side of the road because he mistakenly thought it was a divided four-lane highway and that, when he saw the van, he swerved to the right. The driver of the minivan, Mary Ruth Rivera, told a trooper that she saw the car’s headlights and swerved to the left. In the car were Kirk Williams, Nicholas Williams, Gregory Thomas Williams, 19, and Jennifer Brooke Williams, 16. Two friends -- Mary Ruth Rivera, 28, of Texas, and Aveis Sherell Hayes, 20, of Fort Pierce -- were in the minivan. The women in the minivan had to be extricated from the vehicle. The six patients were taken to Ocala Regional Medical Center in Ocala, where Kirk T. Williams died. The other patients had non-life-threatening injuries.
