Suspect named in hit-and-run bicycle accident

The FHP identified that man Monday as Donald Ray Thomas, 20, of Goodrich Avenue in Sarasota. The FHP said it plans to seek an arrest warrant for Thomas for leaving the scene of a crash with serious bodily injury.
Hours after a hit-and-run accident Thursday morning left a 13-year-old bicylist with serious injuries, a Florida Highway Patrol trooper asked the man identified as the driver who left the scene to turn himself in. Instead, the driver hung up the phone, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The FHP identified that man Monday as Donald Ray Thomas, 20, of Goodrich Avenue in Sarasota. The FHP said it plans to seek an arrest warrant for Thomas for leaving the scene of a crash with serious bodily injury. Samuel Thayer, 13, was riding his blue Diamond Back Edgewood mountain bike south on the edge of southbound Lockwood Ridge Road about 10 a.m. Thursday. At the same time, Thomas and another man, Derrick Lamont Brown, 21, of Sarasota were heading south on Lockwood Ridge Road in a Chrysler Pacifica SUV. According to reports, Thomas was driving when the right front of the SUV struck Samuel's bicycle and threw him to the pavement. The SUV continued south, made a right turn onto Peachtree Street where witnesses say they saw the driver get out of the car and run away, according to reports. The passenger, Brown, then got behind the wheel and drove away.
