Van driver killed in fiery crash with semitrailer on I-275 north of Tampa
A semitrailer rear-ended a stopped van without lights late Monday on Interstate 275 north of Tampa, igniting the van into flames, killing its driver and closing the highway for several hours. The crash occurred at 11:42 p.m. in the southbound center lane, about three miles north of Bearss Avenue, the Florida Highway Patrol said. The force of the impact sent the tractor-trailer into the northbound lanes. The van’s driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The man has not been identified pending notification of family, the highway patrol said. The truck driver, 49-year-old Harry F. Hobbs, of Cleveland, Tennessee, was not injured.
I-275 reopened after fatal crash closed both directions for six hours
The van immediately burst into flames, and was pushed into the northbound lanes where it came to rest.
The semi-truck stopped in the southbound lanes.
The driver of the van stained fatal injuries and died at the scene.
Southbound traffic was diverted at the I-75/I-275 split just south of Wesley Chapel, while northbound traffic was made to exit at Bearss Avenue in North Tampa.
