Four people killed in crash in Troup County

The state patrol said a Nissan Altima was going west on Wares Cross Road and ran a red light, at which point it was hit by a GMC Sierra 2500 going north on GA-1.

In a devastating early morning crash, four LaGrange residents lost their lives when their Nissan Altima collided with a GMC Sierra 2500 pickup truck at the intersection of GA-1 and Wares Cross Road in Troup County. The incident occurred shortly after midnight on Sunday, according to Georgia State Patrol (GSP) reports. Investigators determined that the Nissan was traveling westbound on Wares Cross Road when it failed to stop at a red light and entered the intersection. The northbound GMC Sierra subsequently struck the Nissan on its left side with significant force, causing the smaller vehicle to rotate multiple times. The impact was so severe that a backseat passenger who wasn't wearing a seatbelt was ejected from the vehicle. All four occupants of the Nissan, ranging in age from 23 to 33, were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the GMC sustained serious injuries and was transported to WellStar West Georgia Medical Center for treatment. GSP has temporarily withheld the victims' names pending notification of their families.

Location and Infrastructure

The collision occurred at the intersection of GA-1 (also known as State Highway 1 or the Dixie Highway in some sections) and Wares Cross Road, a significant junction in Troup County. GA-1 serves as a major north-south arterial route through western Georgia, connecting LaGrange to surrounding communities with relatively high traffic volumes, particularly on weekends. The intersection is controlled by traffic signals and features standard crossing patterns typical of rural highway junctions. This area is approximately 5-7 miles from downtown LaGrange, the largest city in Troup County, and serves as a connector between residential areas and the main highway. The intersection has standard visibility in normal conditions, though nighttime driving presents additional challenges, especially at the midnight hour when this accident occurred. The surrounding area features a mix of rural and developing properties with some commercial establishments nearby.

Legal Rights and Considerations

Under Georgia law, families of the deceased victims may have grounds for wrongful death claims based on the circumstances of the accident. Georgia operates under a modified comparative negligence system, meaning compensation can be reduced by the percentage of fault assigned to each party. The surviving family members typically have two years from the date of death to file wrongful death lawsuits in Georgia, per the state's statute of limitations. The driver of the GMC may have personal injury claims against the Nissan driver's insurance, while the Nissan passengers' families might have claims against both drivers' insurance policies. Available compensation could include medical expenses, funeral costs, lost wages, pain and suffering, and loss of companionship. Georgia's minimum liability insurance requirements are $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury, though these limits are often insufficient in fatal accidents of this magnitude.
