Four University of Georgia Students Die in Crash Outside of Athens

The Oconee County Sheriff Scott Berry said two vehicles were involved in the accident which took place at around 9 p.m. ET on Highway 15 just south of Athens, Georgia.

One of the cars was carrying five young women from the University of Georgia, Berry told NBC News. He said four died in the crash and another is in critical condition. It was not immediately clear if the driver of the second vehicle was injured.

Four University of Georgia students are dead and another student was critically injured after a crash on a rural highway a few miles outside of Watkinsville on Wednesday night, according to Oconee County Sheriff Scott Berry.

UPDATE: Crash victim remains in critical condition, other driver released from hospital

Following a fatal crash in Watkinsville Wednesday night that killed four University of Georgia students, one UGA student remains in critical condition at Athens Regional Medical Center, according to Oconee County Sheriff Scott Berry. As of 7:11 a.m. the driver of the other vehicle involved had been released from the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to the Oconee County Sheriff's Office Facebook page.

Incident report of fatal UGA crash released

According to the police incident report, which was released on Friday, the vision of the driver that crossed the center line was not obscured. The incident report said it was unknown if the driver had been distracted. 

Weather conditions at the time of the collision, which happened around 8:55 p.m., were listed as "clear" in the report, and the roadway was said to be dry.

"Ms. Kim's family is appreciative for the outpouring of support from the University of Georgia community and the public, but have requested privacy at this time," Sanders said in the statement.
